If you are looking for a proven offshore "round-the-world" yacht that will safely and swiftly take you and your family anywhere your imagination can wander; then Intermezzo II, will exceed your toughest criteria. Built, owned & cruised for many years by re-known Bluewater Cruisers and Authors, Steve & Linda Dashew, as their Personal Yacht, Intermezzo II is Hull # 1 of the well-respected Deerfoot 62 Series and more recent developmental designs, Sundeer Offshore Cruisers.
Designed by Angelo Lavaranos and built by International Yachts, Ltd. in Cape Town, South Africa, this 1982 Deerfoot 62 Cutter, has a sturdy and sleek Aluminum Hull; purposely constructed with a minimum of bolt-on hardware and every piece of deck hardware possible is welded to the deck or hull to minimize dissimilar metal corrosion and penetrations that would eventually leak. Her interior hull & deck in all living spaces and in the two watertight bulkheads is insulated from the waterline to the deck; providing an effective thermal and sound barrier.
Re-powered in 2003 with a Yanmar 140hp Diesel, this 1982 Deerfoot 62 Cutter has a very versatile and economical Electrical system designed to generate plenty of power with 3 engine alternators capable of outputting a total of 370 Amps and 6 Solar Panels that easily output 240 Watts. Large 12V Gel battery banks are easily charged and maintained ensuring that all the onboard electrical systems, including the two refrigerators and large deep freezer, lights, and electronics, are available when you need them. In August 2016, her bottom was sandblasted, 5 coats of Epoxy Barrier Coat and fresh bottom paint applied, as well as a new cutlass bearing and the feathering Max-Prop was reconditioned. The pitch of the Max-Prop is externally adjustable.
Her Cutter Rig with multiple headsails and all halyards, sheets and control lines led aft to the sheltered cockpit with sheet stoppers and multiple self-tailing two-speed winches, Intermezzo II is easily handled by a couple. She is capable of 200 to 250 miles per day; and easily reaches speeds of 8.5kts to 9kts in only 14 knots of breeze across the deck on a close reach. The Dashews and current owners report that her helm is well-balanced and she is easy to manage, fast, dry and comfortable.
The interior accommodations are spacious yet functional, clean and exceptionally well-maintained. There is a passageway at the bottom of the companionway stairs with one Stateroom on each side, each with bunk beds and generous varnished teak cabinetry and one head with vanity, shower and electric toilet. Forward of the passageway is the Galley, Nav Station, Salon and Dining table; capable of entertaining a full crew and guests. All flooring is varnished teak, and the white and bright ceiling has varnished teak battens that accent the length of this huge area. Forward of the Salon is the Master Stateroom with several hanging lockers, a large double berth with storage cabinets outboard and 6 deep drawers below and a cushioned settee. All the way forward is a private Master Head, with a Bathtub and shower, vanity with sink, several storage cabinets, and an electric toilet. The excellent condition of the interior is testament to how dry this boat is, and how all three owners have maintained her to a high standard.
Intermezzo II is ready for her next owners and with some additional updating, she will be ready for long distance bluewater cruising again. Her slip at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina is transferable to the new owner and is an excellent port to spend time getting acclimated to your new boat and has many competent and experience local marine service vendors to help you with any upgrades. Intermezzo II has proven to be a safe & comfortable voyaging 3 Stateroom, 2 Heads (one bathtub) home for its original owners, Steve & Linda Dashew, who sing her praises in their well-read book, Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, first published in 1989. Considering all the future designs and layouts built by Deerfoot and Sundeer to Dashew's specs, based on years of bluewater cruising, the authors look back fondly at Intermezzo II as:
..."still our favorite interior layout. A major reason for this is a companionway aft, between the two staterooms. It provides lots of security when going or coming from the cockpit, makes it ease to get into or out of foulies, and keeps the ambient wind and water noise out of the main living areas of the boat. The two aft cabins are excellent in heavy weather. The Saloon/Galley/Nav area is one large room. You won't get claustrophobia in there. Our stateroom being forward was plus in port. We We could hear the anchor if we were dragging and it was well ventilated."
This "Original" Deerfoot 62 has been enjoyed by two more owners since sold by the Dashews, and the interior has stood the test of time and thousands of miles at sea since launched in South Africa in 1982. What Dashew didn't mention in his book is that the companionway and cockpit seats are now fully enclosed on 3 sides by the hard dodger/pilothouse with Plexi windshield and sides; so when you go down the companionway stairs, the interior stays dry and clean in all weather conditions; so instead of seeing a companionway ravaged by salt spray with battle wounds, you will be amazed to enter the aft passageway that looks as clean and fresh as the rest of the pampered and well-maintained interior.
Each of the two aft staterooms have bunk beds, opening deck hatches, varnished teak cabinetry with drawers under the lower berths, and additional cabinets and shelves. The Port Aft SR has an ensuite private head, with vanity, sink, shower, shower sump, storage cabinet on the outboard wall, and an electric head. Aft in the Stbd SR is a space equal in size to the aft Port head, but instead has a Dryer, and outboard a storage area that is ideal as a tool and spare parts locker. All the flooring is Varnished Teak, and the white ceilings and wall panels are accented with varnished teak battens. An A/C system is dedicated to this area of the yacht and also provides venting to the Galley area.
Moving forward, the spaciousness of the full beam Salon/Galley/Nav area will rival the living area of many condos. Open, yet strategically placed teak grab rails are reminders that this 1982 Deerfoot 62 Cutter was built to live at sea. The U-Shaped Galley is to port with a dedicated top-loading deep freezer, two front loading refrigerators, a 3-Burner gimbaled Propane Stove with Oven (needs thermostat controller), a Microwave Oven, dual deep SS Sinks, and storage cabinets and drawers above and below the counter-tops.
Opposite the Galley to starboard, is the Nav Station, with a comfortable forward-facing Chart Table & cushioned seat, with GPS, VHF, & Radar Display outboard, and all the electrical 240VAC & 12VDC Electrical Panels, Displays, and Controllers conveniently located on the aft bulkhead of the Nav Station. There is a Shelf above the Navigation & Electrical Panel Equipment. There are four 36"x36" Opening Bomar Deck Hatches, and 6 Fixed Oval Portlights, each trimmed with varnished teak, providing plenty of natural light and excellent ventilation from the deck.
Forward of the galley is the U-Shaped Dining area with a large table, capable of seating 6-8 crew and guests. A large built in varnished teak shelving unit with 12 deep sections on the forward bulkhead provides plenty of space to safely display your favorite books and treasures. The Salon has several goose-neck adjustable brass reading lamps, and storage under the seats and along the outboard walls. Opposite the Dinette is a long Settee with storage Cabinets and shelves behind and on either side. The second A/C System has one evaporator and fan in the salon area and the second evaporator and fan in the Master Stateroom, forward of the Salon and separated by a solid door.
The door to the Master Stateroom is in line with the aft passageway & companionway stairs, and the Master Head is all the way forward; so you don't have to navigate an obstacle course to transit from one end of the interior to the other. Enter the Master SR and the queen berth is to Port, with deep storage cabinets along the outboard wall, a shelf above, and a double row of 6 drawers along the face of the lower frame of the berth. Opposite to Starboard is a hanging locker, small cushioned settee, and another hanging locker forward. Above on center is an opening 36"x36" Bomar Deck Hatch, and one fixed Portlight on each side of the hull, all trimmed with varnished teak.
The private Master Head is all the way forward with a vanity and sink athwartships, electric toilet, bathtub with shower outboard to Port with additional storage cabinets on each outboard wall.
This 1982 Deerfoot 62 Cutter has an electrical system designed for self-sufficiency and versatility on extended cruises. It will come as no surprise when you meet the current owner, an Electrical Engineer, who has optimized all of the onboard electrical systems that Dashew and Lavarnos designed for Intermezzo II.Among other features, the Isolation Transformer System allows you to convert 120VAC 30A shorepower to 240VAC when necessary and split 240VAC incoming shorepower service into two 120VAC legs controllable on the Master Electrical Panel aft of the Nav Station.
The 12VDC Electrical System includes:

Angelo Lavaranos designed the hull of Intermezzo II to safely and comfortably carry Steve & Linda Dashew's family around the world. Built by International Yachts, Ltd. in Cape Town, South Africa, this 1982 Deerfoot 62 Cutter, has a sturdy and sleek Aluminum Hull; purposely constructed with a minimum of bolt-on hardware and every piece of deck hardware possible is welded to the deck or hull to minimize dissimilar metal corrosion and penetrations that would eventually leak. This included 32" high 1 1/4 inch SS Stanchions & Lifelines with welded sockets to the deck with reinforcing pads underneath and sleeved into plastic bearings and isolated from the aluminum deck.
In Dashew's own words from his Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia: "Aluminum offers a host of advantages over other custom yacht building materials --all structural connections welded with consistently predictable results; lower center of gravity for better sail-carrying ability; lighter displacement for a given level of strength; virtually unlimited tankage built right into the hull; easy attachment of brackets, engine beds, and stringers; simple installation of watertight bulkheads; and ease of repair or modification."
For those of you who want construction specifications for this vessel; here they are in Dashew's words again: from page 726 of his book: "Angelo (Lavaranos) had specified a one inch thick keel plate, 1/2 inch sides, and a hull bottom plating running from 1/2 inch in the center to 7/32 inch in the topsides. She was framed longitudinally with five-inch deep webs at approximately five-foot centers over which ran 2x2x1/4 inch angles every 12 inches." In addition to the watertight machinery area aft, there is a partial collision bulkhead 6 feet aft of the bow, followed by the forward 14 foot section of the hull that is dedicated to storage with pipe-framed sailbins & shelves with access from the deck via a 4'x4' Deck Hatch. Intermezzo II has a long fin keel with integrated tanks providing most of the ballast with a 6' draft and spade rudder.
Her interior hull & deck in all living spaces and in the two watertight bulkheads is insulated from the waterline to the deck; providing an effective thermal and sound barrier and contributing to an exceptionally dry interior. On deck, there are 9 Dorade Vents each with their own SS Hand Rail, providing protection for the Dorade, as well as providing convenient grab rails for crew on deck. Additionally, there are 6 Opening Deck Hatches, four of which, over the Salon, are 36x36 inches, providing excellent lighting and ventilation. The cockpit has an aluminum and recently updated smoked plexi hard dodger that keeps the companionway and crew dry in all conditions. All halyards and control lines are led aft and navigation displays are above the companionway. The Traveler is forward of the companionway and dodger, with lines led aft, and the track is nearly full beam, allowing for a wide range of mainsail adjustments and trim.
On Deck you will find the following equipment:
This 1982 Deerfoot 62 is cutter-rigged with a double-spreader mast and designed with the practical objective of having smaller headsails that can easily be handled by a couple. You can expect sailing performance of 8.5 to 9 knots consistently on a close reach with 50 degrees of apparent wind at 14 knots over the deck; and plan on 200 to 250 miles per day.
