2005 Macgregor 26 - The revolutionary unsinkable MacGregor 26 is the world's most unique trailerable sailboat. The Macgregor 26 is hybrid sailboat/motorboat, or "Motorsailor." Its design centers around a 50hp Honda outboard motor (as opposed to 10hp or less for a normal sailboat of this size) and a powerboat shaped hull. Consequently, it's a compromise of the two, neither a fast powerboat, nor a fast racing sailboat, but it allows the best of both worlds. As a sailboat it's a comfortable cruiser that can be easily handled by one person and sails nicely. As a powerboat it can easily achieve 15mph or more, depending on load, or even pull your kids on a tube. It's designed to be light so it can be easily towed and launched from its low trailer. It doesn't have a sailboat weighted keel. Instead, it has a retractable Swing Keel and for ballast it has a built in water tank that can be flooded by simply opening a valve, this will take on 1400lbs of water in about 5 minutes. For faster motoring, the water-ballast tank is emptied in about 5 minutes by motoring on a semi-plane and re-opening the valve and letting gravity do its work. With the swing keel retracted it has a draft of less than a foot, allowing it to go almost anywhere, and can even be beached, something impossible for a fixed keel sailboat. It offers great sailing or if you prefer Power boating, with a 50hp outboard, full standing headroom, and wheel steering. It sleeps six in three full-sized double berths. One is as large as a king-sized bed. There is a full galley and enclosed head. The 26 has a walk-through transom for easy boarding. A hinged steering seat swings down to close off the open transom for security. 1,400 pounds of water ballast provide the self-righting stability of a keel boat. The boat weighs 2,250 pounds empty, allowing high powering speed and easy towing behind standard cars. The 26 is just under 8 feet wide (beam) for legal towing everywhere. It is the easiest to ramp-launch and rig of any of the competing trailerable sailboats.
